The picture above gives new meaning to Apple Computer!

Speaking of Apple computers, it is said that the late Steve Jobs was inspired to name his company Apple after working on a community farm in Oregon. Here are some other apple facts:

  • Apples are native to central Asia

  • There are more than 6,500 varieties

  • Honeycrisp apples are a cross-pollination of two apple varieties, Macoun and Honeygold

  • Apples are a member of the rose family

  • Apples have many health benefits and may even reduce the risk of many types of cancer (hence the saying above)

As for pancake fun facts, the famous late playwright William Shakespeare had an affinity for this yummy breakfast treat. He was even inspired to mention them in some of his plays!

You've probably heard the old saying, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." Well, thanks to my recent purchase of Honeycrisp Apples from Washington-based Apples In A Seed, I won't be seeing a doctor for quite some time.

Honeycrisp apples are "The best, most exciting apple we've ever introduced," according to apple expert Jim Luby of the University of Minnesota, where the Honeycrisp apple was created.

And with so many apple recipes, they're also fun to cook with!

Quick and Easy Apple Pancakes Recipe

These easy apple pancakes taste like apple pie! I make this simple recipe for breakfast for my husband and son whenever we have extra apples (my son likes to help with the mixing).

Since I live with a perpetually hungry grown man and a growing young boy, I typically use a pancake mix to speed up the process. But you can also use your favorite recipe for making pancakes from scratch. If you use sweet apples, you won't even need syrup!

Ingredients:

  • 3 Apples, peeled

  • Pancake Mix (for about 12 pancakes)

  • 1/4 cup apple sauce (optional)

  • Cinnamon (optional)

  • Butter or Cooking Spray

Prepare pancake mix according to package directions.

Shred the apples using a potato or carrot peeler.

Add the apples, any juice from the shredded apples, apple sauce and cinnamon to the pancake mix and stir.

Heat a cooking pan or skillet on medium and melt butter (or use cooking spray). Cook pancakes until lightly browned on both sides.

Tip: Don't overheat your skillet or pan. There's nothing worse than eating burnt pancakes, except, of course, for smelling burnt pancakes.

Never Too Fruity Apple Cocktails

Not a pancake fan? Don't despair. Apples are also a great addition to many cocktail recipes:

  • Mr. Snow Miser drink recipe
One sip of this fancy pants holiday punch with sliced apples, Laird's Applejack, Prosecco, and more, and you'll grow a full beard on your face.
  • Apple Pie Cocktail
The Apple Pie cocktail is versatile since it is as enjoyable in the summer as it is for the holiday season.
  • Tasty Appletini
Based of the character JD from the television sitcom Scrubs.

A Tip for Feeding Apples to a Finicky Eater

It's always a challenge to convince a young child to eat his or her fruits and vegetables. We all know the tried and true methods, such as drenching broccoli with cheese. But when it comes to apples, I discovered a simple trick that's also completely healthy (inspired, believe it or not) by major fast food chains.

There's nothing actually fried about this easy apple recipe, but the name goes a long way towards convincing your child that they're about to eat a delicious treat. This is one of the best apple recipes because there's no cooking involved!

  • alezafree's Apple Fries
Peel the skin off an apple and discard. Cut the apple into thin, fry-like slices, and serve with dipping sauce. I prefer using lowfat yogurt as a dipping sauce instead of a sugary caramel. A bit of smooth peanut butter is also a healthy, delicious dipping alternative.

That sounds so good. For some reason my kids don't care for apples but I bet that they would like them in pancakes.

Thank you both for your comments.

Apple pancakes are delicious. And no, you don't need syrup, but a little bit of Maple Syrup really brings apple pancakes home. Is it just me, or does the first pancake never turn out right?

alezafree 7 months ago

@homesteadpatch You are so right! The first pancake never turns out right, and the last pancake is always slightly overcooked! It's that pancake right in the middle that is always the best!!

Being from Washington State, I'm a big fan of apples. Is it possible to make the pancakes without the applesauce and still have them taste good? Most applesauce has high-fructose corn syrup and too much sugar.

alezafree 7 weeks ago

@Thadrok, Yes. You definitely can. Totally optional. I am with you on trying to avoid high fructose corn syrup. I'm allergic to corn. :)
